Personally, I think that it would be far more appropriate to display the rating that the reviewer has given the piece. I can see how listing the average rating can be (and is) helpful . . . but it gives us no insight into the content of the review that item was given by a recent reviewer. (Thus the name of the box - "recent reviews." ;-) )

That understood, I do think that it is an improvement to list the title of the item reviewed instead of the title of the recent review. While some headlines really do grab your attention - Spuzz's review for Peter Borik comes immediately to mind - I would rather know what it is I am looking at before I read the review on that item's page. This certainly helps people avoid loading material that may not be safe (or otherwise considered appropriate) for work . . . i.e. the stripper films in the Prelinger collection. Naturally, it would be ideal to have both the title of the item and the review in the recent reviews box, although I realize that the footprint of the reviews area would grow commensurately.

SUGGESTION:

I, and likely many others, are often made aware of items in the various collections as a result of the user reviews. However, the 'window' of recent reviews on the main page, as well on the collections pages, is limited to only the last five reviews posted. As a result, I suspect that that most people do not have the opportunity to read the majority of reviews posted as they often leave that 'window' fairly quickly. So, would it be possible to have an RSS feed (or feeds?) with a larger 'window' dedicated to just reviews? Or perhaps a web page? (When a review is added, the information from each review could be dynamically added to the appropriate web page / RSS feed.) While I for one would find this an immensely useful addition, what does everyone else think?

Thanks for reading & best regards,
D. Warburton

some quick things that might help "today" 8-)

this will sort all the prelinger items by "most recently reviewed":
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Aprelinger&sort=-%2Freviews%2Freview%2Freviewdate

you can see most recent 8 reviews (4 x 2)
across the entire website
by looking at brand new "skin" link on the top
page (in the lower right corner).

one of our engineers here might be able to update our RSS generator to make the first URL corollary in RSS...
